How to decarbonize your ship - impact of FuelEU Maritime on solar PV for bulk carrier
A 100 kWp solar PV system can save a handymax bulk carrier ~ $250,000 in 10 years of which $90,000 in FuelEU. How is that? FuelEU Maritime introduces rising compliance costs and operational complexity. Onboard solar PV offers a simple, zero-emission solution to reduce both emissions and regulatory exposure. This case study explores the business case for installing a 100 kWp solar PV system on a Handymax bulk carrier, focusing on its impact on fuel savings, EU ETS, and FuelEU Maritime compliance costs. The PV panels are mounted on cargo hatch covers and modeled to offset auxiliary engine load during idle or hoteling periods. Despite only a 0.5% CO₂ reduction, the system delivers a strong return on investment. With a CAPEX of $100,000, the payback time is about 3 years, supported by ~$90,000 in FuelEU-related savings. The model uses annual solar energy generation (location-specific) and multiplies this by a fixed specific fuel consumption (SFC) value to calculate fuel saved. Key assumptions include full conversion of PV energy into auxiliary load reduction, 500 kW auxiliary engine capacity, and 75% EU-related sailing time. The tool demonstrates sensitivity to SFC and fuel prices, while EU ETS prices and time in EU waters have less impact—unless drastically changed.
