Dr. Matthew J. Levy: SEMSTAR (4/3/2026)
In this episode of the Florida EMS Webinar, Dr. Matthew Levy from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine joins hosts Peter Antevy, MD, FAEMS and Tanner Smida, EMT-P, MD/PhD candidate to discuss the SEMSTAR project: Standardized EMS Metrics for Survival in Transfusion and Advanced Resuscitation. Prehospital blood transfusion programs are expanding across the country, but the lack of standardized data collection has made it nearly impossible to benchmark outcomes, compare programs, or drive meaningful quality improvement. SEMSTAR addresses that gap head-on. Using a modified Delphi methodology with 28 subject-matter experts and input from 89 EMS systems, the project produced 168 consensus-driven data elements: 86 core metrics for universal reporting and 82 expanded metrics for comprehensive analysis. The project also established standardized definitions for hemorrhagic circulatory collapse and survival after prehospital transfusion. Published in Trauma Surgery and Acute Care Open (2026), SEMSTAR represents the first national framework of its kind and lays the groundwork for a dedicated prehospital blood transfusion registry.
