◼︎ Fifty years ago, when the entire nation was covered in gravel roads, the greatest historical undertaking since the time of Dangun began, modeled after the German Autobahn. And finally, on July 7, 1970, the Gyeongbu Expressway was completed. In an era lacking both technology and experience, this achievement was the result of the noble sacrifice of 77 workers at challenging construction sites like the Okcheon Tunnel and the Daejeon Overpass, as well as the tireless dedication of the entire nation day and night. This road spread logistics and population across the country, established itself as the main artery of Korea's heavy chemical industry, and even transformed music trends and leisure culture. Now, half a century later, the expressway is approaching an era of 5,000 km in total length and has evolved with the Seohae Bridge, which created an artificial island the size of three soccer fields in the sea, and the 11 km Inje-Yangyang Tunnel, which minimized environmental damage to the Baekdudaegan mountain range.
