His book on Gauhar Jaan won the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar and the ARSC International Award, and has been adapted for theatre and film. He holds a doctorate in history and music from the University of Queensland, and is Senior Fellow at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, an Aspen Global Leadership Fellow, and Visiting Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg, Berlin.
