STARLIGHT 2.0 - Webinar: Using the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in Strategic Litigation | DRI
Charter-based arguments are increasingly making their way before courts. But legal practitioners on the national level, in many Member States, still fail to invoke the Charter consistently and even when they do, they often struggle to follow through to timely and effective implementation of court rulings. That’s the gap that the STARLIGHT programme was built to close. The programme helps legal professionals use the Charter effectively for systemic change at a time when the rule of law and fundamental rights are under threat. We already trained the first STARLIGHT 2.0 cohort of legal professionals from across the EU through thematic and skills trainings, clinics, and mentorship and in this webinar we share relevant information about the programme’s structure and format, eligibility criteria, scholarships, the timeline, and the application process. In addition, we have an expert panel, drawing on lessons from past litigation efforts, exploring the challenges and opportunities of applying the Charter and driving systemic change. Speakers: -Marta Pardavi, Co-Chair of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee -Gruša Matevžič, Senior Legal Officer within the Refugee Programme at the Hungarian Helsinki Committee -Marie-Hélène Ludwig, human rights lawyer and Senior Strategic Litigation Advisor for ILGA-Europe -Rosalba Striani, the Acting Head of the Fundamental Rights and Free Movement Unit in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers (DG JUST) and -María Amor Martín Estébanez, Legal and Policy Officer at the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). The discussion was moderated by Nino Tsereteli, Programme Coordinator at Democracy Reporting International.
