Nagaland's Single-Stringed Instrument That Carries Whole Songs

In Upper Khomi village, Nagaland, a single-stringed instrument still carries the folk songs of an entire community. Known as the Taati, this instrument is built by smoke-curing gourds over fire, stretching a treated animal bladder across the opening, and carving wood by hand to form its neck and body, a process that takes days of patient work. For the Chakhesang Naga community, the Taati provides a steady, drone-like accompaniment to songs of harvest, longing, and memory, passed down through observation rather than formal teaching.
