La pensée de zazen 1/2 : « non-pensée » - « fushiryo »

There are many misunderstandings regarding the ‘state of mind’ during zazen. From ‘don’t think!’ through to ‘focus your mind on a single point’ or ‘don’t let your thoughts influence you!’, right up to the pursuit of ‘fulfilment’ and mental ‘calm’, misinterpretations abound. Master Dogen wrote a text, the ‘Zazenshin’ (translated by Yoko Orimo as ‘Maxims for Seated Meditation’), to counter these errors and clear the mind of all confusion. It is in this text that he describes the famous ‘hishiryo’ (‘that which is not of the order of thought’) as the ‘distinctive feature’ of the practice of zazen at the level of consciousness.
