MASTECTOMIA / ADENOMASTECTOMIA / MASTECTOMIA PRESERVADORA DE PELE

Radical mastectomy was the first effective treatment for breast cancer, developed in 1894 by William Halsted. Like other treatments, the surgery has evolved and become less aggressive, allowing for immediate breast reconstruction. The types of mastectomy are as follows: 1) Radical mastectomy - removes the entire mammary gland, along with skin and pectoral muscles (major and minor). 2) Modified radical mastectomy - similar to the previous one, but preserves the pectoralis minor muscle. 3) Skin-sparing mastectomy - removes the mammary gland and the areola-nipple complex (popularly known as the "nipple"). 4) Adenomastectomy (or nipple-sparing) - removes only the mammary gland, preserving all the skin and the areola-nipple complex. When mastectomy is necessary, whenever possible, the least aggressive techniques (skin and nipple-sparing) are used, allowing for immediate breast reconstruction and a more natural appearance.
