The Great Hospital Norwich Part 2
Founded by Bishop Walter Suffield as he approached old age – he had an ideal site on his doorstep, just a few yards beyond the walls of his Palace, next to the road known as Holme Street, now Bishopsgate, he founded a hospital, dedicated to St Giles. Much of the land belonged to William of Dunwich, one of the city’s wealthiest merchants, and the Bishop persuaded him to donate the riverside meadows to St Giles Hospital, completed in 1251. In Part 2 we visit the church dedicated to St Helen and see the renown Eagle Ward with its delightful roof
