Ralph Cifaretto is widely considered the most detestable character in The Sopranos. He is cruel, chaotic, and leaves a trail of destroyed lives in his wake—from Tracee at the Bada Bing to Jackie Jr. in the Boonton projects. But there is a very specific reason why he is also one of the most compelling villains in television history. In this video, we break down the psychology of Ralph Cifaretto and the uncomfortable truth he reveals about the rest of the Soprano crime family. While Tony performs guilt in therapy, Carmela performs ignorance at church, and Christopher performs loyalty, Ralph doesn't perform anything. He is a monster who never once pretends to be a good guy. We explore his parasitic relationships with Rosalie Aprile and Janice Soprano, the real reason his death had to be so unglamorous, and why a stable fire involving a racehorse named Pie-O-My was the only thing that could finally break Tony Soprano's tolerance for him. The gap everyone else maintains between what they project and what they are isn't actually a moral advantage. It's just better PR.
