I Will Fear No Evil | Psalm 23:4

What do you do when the darkness will not lift? When the pain does not stop, the grief does not heal, and a voice in the dark whispers that God has abandoned you? In Psalm 23:4, David walks through the darkest place in the entire psalm, the valley of the shadow of death, and says something almost impossible to believe: "I will fear no evil." Not because the valley is not dark. Not because there is nothing to fear. But for one reason, and one reason only: "for you are with me." This message walks through the second confession of Psalm 23 and the comfort it holds for anyone in a dark season of life. We see that this is not only a verse for the dying, but a verse for the living. We meet the Shepherd who does not hand us off at the mouth of the valley, but goes ahead of us into the dark, who has walked this road himself, and who comes armed with a rod to fight what is against us and a staff to keep us from wandering away. And we find that the deepest comfort is not that the valley will be short, but that our Companion will bring us all the way through. Whatever valley you are walking this morning, there is a Shepherd who knows the way, who is strong when you are not, and who will not lose what is his.
