The Batu Caves are a massive cave system located in the town of Batu Caves in Gombat District, Selangor, Malaysia. It is considered Malaysia's most sacred Hindu cave. The caves contain numerous exhibits and murals based on Hindu mythology. The limestone that forms the caves is estimated to be approximately 400 million years old. Until they attracted the attention of Chinese and Westerners in the late 19th century, they were primarily used by local Orang Asli as shelter and temporary housing. However, in 1890, local Tamil merchant K. Thamboosamy Pillai erected and enshrined a standing statue of Lord Murugan, and the site developed into a Hindu temple. The annual Thaipusam festival, Hinduism's largest festival, is held within the caves from late January to early February. To enter the caves, one must climb 272 steps.
