German wildlife filmmaker Rainer Bergomaz and his Indigenous colleague Yung Sandy set off on an adventurous expedition to one of the last unexplored regions of our planet to find one of the largest lizards in the world: the black caiman. Heavier than a bison or grizzly bear and as long as the longest saltwater crocodiles in Australia, the black caiman is a true giant of the rainforest. Like all large lizards, the black caiman was relentlessly hunted for centuries. Its species is now critically endangered. It lives in only a few areas of South America. Humans are the only real enemy of these lizards, which have survived unchanged since the time of the dinosaurs. The upper reaches of the Essequibo River, deep in the Guiana hinterland, are one of the last places where specimens over five meters long can still be found. And that's exactly where Rainer Bergomaz and Yung Sandy are headed.
