It refers to a specific type of articulation or merging of certain Arabic letters within a word during recitation. Idgham occurs when a non-voweled letter (the letter without a vowel sound) is followed by a voweled letter (the letter with a vowel sound) in the same word. In such cases, the non-voweled letter is assimilated or merged into the voweled letter, resulting in a single sound. There are two types of Idgham: Idgham with Ghunnah: This type of Idgham occurs when a nasal letter (either "n" or "m") is followed by a letter pronounced from the same area of the mouth. The nasal sound is prolonged or sustained, creating a humming sound, known as Ghunnah. This merging happens within the same word. Idgham without Ghunnah: This type of Idgham occurs when a non-nasal non-voweled letter, such as "t," "d," "b," "j," "q," or "k," is followed by a voweled letter. The non-voweled letter is assimilated into the voweled letter without prolonging the sound. Idgham is an important aspect of Tajweed because it helps in maintaining the flow, rhythm, and clarity of the recitation of the Quran. Reciters of the Quran are trained to observe the rules of Idgham to ensure the proper pronunciation and beauty of the recitation.
