Gromko, 80, of Henderson, died July 11, 2004. He was born March 15, 1924, in New Haven, Conn., and has been a resident of Las Vegas since 1959. A graduate of Juilliard School of Music and Columbia University, William began his musical career in New York City as a violist for the Radio City Music Hall, also performing with the New York and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestras, the Boston and Pittsburgh Symphonies, while developing studio recordings. His Las Vegas contribution as a professional violist since 1959, for the Sands, Riviera, and Hilton Orchestras include playing for such greats as the "Rat Pack," Liberace, Elvis, Danny Thomas and Judy Garland. William's Civic contributions to enrich the Las Vegas community were numerous. He was founder of the UNLV String Chamber Orchestra and served as its conductor for 12 years. He also was instrumental in establishing the Las Vegas Chapter of Young Audiences, an organization that visited each school throughout the Clark County School District, fostering musical appreciation through professional musicians playing in concert. This effort continued for 12 years. As founding conductor, in 1976, for The Las Vegas Civic Symphony, this community service was a part of the City of Las Vegas Cultural Arts program until a few years ago. The orchestra membership of music educators, students, retirees, professional and amateurs gave these individuals the opportunity for concert experience in a public format. The symphony offered free concerts to the public at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center and the Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza. William was honored by Mayor Ron Lurie, in 1987, for his contribution to the community through musical service, and as founding director of the Las Vegas Civic Symphony. He was again recognized in 1996, by the Cultural and Community Affairs of the City of Las Vegas
