10 km from Borjomi there is a very ancient "Green Monastery" Chitakhevi or Chitakhevsky Monastery. Since a river with this name flows nearby. On the banks of this river, there are red stones. Local residents believe that the stones have supernatural powers. The monastery is hidden in a dense forest and was named Mtsvane (green), since it is located in the thick of forests and bushes and is built of stones that over time have become covered with thick green moss. In the 16th century, a misfortune occurred in the monastery. The troops of the invader Shah Tamaz plundered the monastery, and the monks were brutally mutilated and killed. And their bodies were scattered around the territory. Since then, there is a belief that in the river on which the monastery is built, there are red stones. They absorbed the blood of poor martyrs. They say that nothing can be taken or picked up from the entire territory. After some time, the remains of the monks were collected and placed on the first floor of the bell tower. You can go in and look. The sight is certainly not for the faint of heart. But this is part of the history of this monastery. After these events, the temple was inactive. And only in the 80s of the last century, the church was restored. And in 2002, monastic life was revived again. Many pilgrims come here to pray and pay tribute to the monks killed here. There are many ambiguities in the history of the monastery. The exact date of its construction is unknown, but it is associated with the names of the disciples of the famous Georgian spiritual figure - Grigol Khandzteli, Christopher and Theodore. Grigol Khandzteli was the founder and leader of numerous monastic communities in Tao-Klarjeti, a historical region in the southwest of Georgia. His disciples continued his work.
