After the Edict of Milan in 313 AD and the Battle of Adrianople, the Empire was once again united under a single emperor, in a divinely invested monarchy, sealed by a new identity: that between Church and State. Paolo Mieli and Professor Alessandro Barbero discuss this in this episode of "Past and Present." In the Middle Ages, the memory of the Christian emperor inspired stories and legends, including that of the "Donation of Constantine," a document through which the emperor supposedly donated the city of Rome and the imperial domains of the West to the Pope, consolidating the primacy of the Church of Rome over the other patriarchates. With this document, the emperor effectively invested the Pope with temporal power. But in 1440, Lorenzo Valla demonstrated that the Donation of Constantine was a forgery: it was actually a text created, perhaps in the Carolingian era in Rome or France, to affirm the supremacy of the Church over the Empire during a controversial and difficult period.
