The main topics of this Word tutorial are: ◾ Creating or Opening a Document ◾ The Word Interface ◾ How to Insert Text ◾ Overview of the Main Keys ◾ Selecting, Cutting, Copying, Pasting, and Moving Text HOW TO CREATE A BLANK DOCUMENT IN WORD: Open Word or, if it's already open, select File - New Select Blank Document HOW TO OPEN A WORD DOCUMENT: To open a file stored on disk, do one of two things: 1) Click the File tab and then Open 2) Press the Ctrl + F12 key combination THE WORD INTERFACE The first feature that appears when you start Word is the ribbon, consisting of a series of commands grouped into tabs. HOW TO INSERT TEXT IN WORD When you open Word, a vertical black line (the cursor) at the top of the page "pulses" and indicates the text insertion point. To add text in Word, simply start typing and press the space bar to space out the words. MAIN KEYS USED WHILE WRITING TAB key: Allows you to quickly move the cursor to the right in predefined 1.25 cm increments. Caps Lock: Sets the uppercase character. Shift: When pressed with an alphabetic character, it capitalizes the character and, when pressed with a key with multiple symbols, activates the topmost symbol. Alt Gr - Alternate for graphic characters: Enables the rightmost symbol for keys with three symbols and the euro symbol for the key. Enter: Used to perform a carriage return, create a new paragraph, and confirm choices made within any dialog box. HOW TO SELECT ONE OR MORE CHARACTERS Place the cursor at the desired location, hold down the Shift key, and simultaneously press a directional arrow key as many times as there are characters to select. Press F8 once, then a directional arrow key as many times as there are characters to select. HOW TO SELECT A WORD Double-click the word. Press Ctrl + Shift + directional arrow key to select the word to the left or right of the cursor. Position yourself within the word and press F8 twice. HOW TO SELECT A SENTENCE Position yourself within the line and press F8 three times. Hold down the Ctrl key and simultaneously click within the sentence. HOW TO SELECT A PARAGRAPH Click three times quickly in the paragraph. Position the pointer to the left, in the selection area, at the paragraph, and double-click. Position the cursor in the paragraph and press F8 four times. HOW TO SELECT THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT Position the cursor to the left, in the selection bar, and click three times in succession. On the Home tab, in the Editing group, click Select and choose Select All. Press Ctrl + 5 (on the numeric keypad). Press F8 five times. HOW TO COPY OR CUT TEXT To copy or cut text, select the text you want to duplicate or move and choose one of the following: 1) From the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click the Copy or Cut button; 2) From the shortcut menu, activated by right-clicking the selected text, choose Copy or Cut; 3) From the keyboard, press Ctrl + C (to copy) or Ctrl + X (to cut). HOW TO PASTE COPIED OR CUT TEXT To paste copied or cut text, click in the document where you want to insert it, then: 1) From the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click the Paste button; 2) From the shortcut menu (activated by right-clicking), choose Paste; 3) From the keyboard, press Ctrl + V. HOW TO MOVE AND COPY WITH DRAG AND DROP You can move selected text within the document by dragging it to the desired location (a technique called drag and drop).
