Larry, the Downing Street Cat - Why there is no cat flap
People often ask me — usually as I’m sitting regally on the steps of Number 10, minding my own business — why I can’t just let myself in. You’d think, being Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, I might have earned a key by now. But alas, Number 10’s famous black door isn’t exactly your average cat flap. It may look like a charming relic from Georgian times, with its shiny brass letterbox declaring “First Lord of the Treasury” and its proud lion-head knocker gleaming for the cameras, but the truth is rather more… industrial. After an IRA attack in 1991, the dear old wooden door was replaced with a modern, high-security, blast-proof replica — made of reinforced steel so tough it could probably survive a small meteor strike. It’s even one of a pair, swapped regularly for maintenance, like some sort of high-level government laundry rotation. So yes, every time I pop out to inspect the press pack or patrol the cobbles, I have to wait for one of the humans to open up and let me back in. It’s undignified, frankly — a national icon, left loitering on the doorstep like an Amazon parcel. Still, I suppose it’s a small price to pay for the warm radiators, regular meals, and the occasional cuddle from the Prime Minister (though between us, I’m not sure who needs the reassurance more #cats #larrythecat #catsanddogs #cutecat
