The municipality of Piatã is located in the Chapada Diamantina mountain region, at altitudes between 800 and 1,600 meters. Its municipal seat is at an altitude of 1,280 meters, making it the highest municipality in Bahia, surpassing other mountainous municipalities in Bahia, and the 15th highest in Brazil. Due to its altitude, Piatã, located in the central region of the state of Bahia, is considered one of the coldest cities in northeastern Brazil—so much so that the city, especially in winter, attracts thousands of tourists to enjoy its mountainous cold, very similar to that of Europe. Nestled in the plateau of the Tromba and Santana mountains, Piatã is a place full of surprising natural riches, a paradise with great potential for historical, ecological, religious, and adventure sports tourism. The source of the Contas River, one of Bahia's most important rivers, is in the municipality of Piatã, more precisely in the Tromba Mountains. In Piatã, its southern arm begins and further ahead, in the neighboring municipality of Abaíra, it meets its northern arm and, together, they form the Rio de Contas, which continues winding its way to the sea for 620 kilometers.
