माथेरान हे रायगड जिल्ह्‍यातील एक थंड हवेचे ठिकाण आहे. मुंबई आणि पुण्याच्या लोकांना सहलीसाठी सर्वांत जवळची आणि निसर्गसौंदर्याने नटलेली जागा म्हणजे माथेरान. साधारण ८०३ मी. किंवा २६०० फूट उंचीच्या पठारावर माथेरान वसले आहे. संपूर्ण माथा विविध तसेच घनदाट झाडी आणि लाल पायवाटा यांनी भरलेला आहे. येथील पठाराची बरीचशी टोके तसेच पूर्व-पश्चिम व दक्षिणेकडील कडे कोसळले आहेत. ह्या कडांनाच पॉईंटस् म्हटले जाते. ज्या इंग्रजांनी माथेरान वसवले त्यांनीच या पॉईंट्सना नावे दिली, त्यामुळे सहाजिकच ती पॉईंट्सची नावे इंग्रजीत आहेत. माथेरान ही सह्याद्रीच्या मुख्य रांगेपासून जरा सुटावलेली, वेगळी डोंगर रांग आहे. कल्याणच्या मलंग गडापासून ही डोंगर रांग सुरू होते. मलंग गडाला लागून बदलापूरच्या ‘टवली’ गुहांचे किंवा बदलापूरचे डोंगर आहेत. नंतर ‘नवरानवरी’चा डोंगर लागतो. ह्यावर असणाऱ्या बारीकसारीक सुळक्यांमुळे हा डोंगर लगेच ओळखता येतो. त्यापुढे चंदेरीचा प्रचंड उभा सुळका आणि नंतर ‘म्हैसमाळ’ नावाचा डोंगर लागतो. नंतर आरपार भोक असणारा ‘नाखिंद’ डोंगर लागतो आणि मग ‘पेब’ दिसतो. त्याच्यावरही किल्ल्याचे काही अवशेष आहेत. यानंतर मग माथेरानचा डोंगर सुरू होतो. Matheran is one of the smallest hill stations in India. It is located on the Western Ghats range at an elevation of around 800 m (2,625 feet) above sea level. It is about 90 km from Mumbai, and 120 km from Pune. It is Asia's only automobile-free hill station. या किल्ल्याचे मूळ नाव "पेब" हे नाव पेबी देवीवरून पडले असावे. किल्ल्यावरील गुहेचा शिवाजी महाराजांनी धान्य कोठारांसाठी उपयोग केला होता, असा स्पष्ट ऐतिहासिक संदर्भ पेबच्या किल्ल्याबाबत आढळतो.
