The Global State of Citizenship 2025 report | Launch event

This webinar marks the launch of the third edition of the GLOBALCIT Citizenship Law Dataset and a new report on the Global State of Citizenship. Drawing on updated information on the citizenship laws of 191 countries in 2024, and longitudinal data on dual citizenship acceptance since 1960, the GLOBALCIT team will present key findings on the current state of citizenship legislation across the world. The updated dataset highlights three main key themes: First, while discrimination in citizenship law based on sex, gender, or sexual orientation has become increasingly exceptional, it remains prevalent in certain parts of the world. Second, citizenship laws shape the ability of immigrants to acquire the nationality of their destination country, yet the legal requirements for ordinary naturalisation continue to vary significantly across countries and regions. Third, provisions for stripping persons of their citizenship have become increasingly prevalent over the past decades, which means that the status of citizenship is often not truly secure. Speakers address core concerns in citizenship law, including statelessness, arbitrary deprivation, non-discrimination, and the right to change one’s nationality.
