Making Recommendations | EASY ENGLISH VOCABULARY What is a recommendation? A recommendation is something that you believe is the best course of action or suggestion for some body. You’re using your knowledge and authority to tell someone what you think is the right thing to do. It isn’t a rule or obligation, as they have the final choice, but you hope they listen to you. Suggestions and recommendations differ slightly, because with a suggestion you are simply presenting an option, but with a recommendation you are providing an opinion on what you think is right. Some of the best ways to make recommendations are: 1) I recommend + v-ing. 2) I advise you to + inf. 3) You should + inf. 4) You ought to + inf. 5) You had better + inf. All recommendations can be used in both positive and negative forms. Positive forms are used for things we think are a good idea, negative forms are used for things we believe should be avoided as they are a bad idea.
