Aftermath of the 1962 storm in Youghal, Co. Cork.

Aftermath of the 1962 storm in Youghal, Co. Cork. (7th March - Ash Wednesday) It was probably the most destructive weather event in living memory in Youghal in terms of material damage. The south-facing wall of Green Park was demolished and the sea entered flooding a large area of it. North Main Street was extensively flooded. Locals recall seeing a salmon yawl being rowed along the street at the top of Brown Street. Sections of roadway at the Front Strand near the Railway Station were ripped up exposing gas and water mains and those houses nearest the Station including the Esplanade Hotel were extensively damaged and their basements flooded. A number of these were subsequently demolished and replaced with a carpark. Damage was also caused to the Railway Station Shed and fencing. The Red and Black Buoys were torn from their sea bed moorings and driven ashore. Photos © Liam Burke
