It's Saturday, April 18, 2026. Welcome to Lille, the capital of the Hauts-de-France region, where the city had a population of 238,246 in 2023, while the metropolitan area had 1,063,720 inhabitants in 2023. The city and its metropolitan area have a network called ilévia (TCC from 1989 to 1994, then Transpole until 2019), whose purpose is to operate the public transport network for passengers within the territory of the European Metropolis of Lille. In this episode, we'll be taking a look at the two tram lines: R for Roubaix and T for Tourcoing. Nicknamed the "Mongy," after its creator Alfred Mongy, the tramway was designed around the Grand Boulevard, which it has followed since its inauguration on December 11, 1909. The 17.5 km long network is Y-shaped, with a common trunk running from Lille to Croisé-Laroche and two branches heading towards Roubaix and Tourcoing. It initially included a third branch to the city center of Marcq-en-Barœul, opened in 1930 and closed in 1972. The Mongy is one of the few tramways to have escaped the wave of network closures that swept through France from the 1930s to the 1960s. Since 1983, the tramway has run underground in the center of Lille and terminates at Lille-Flandres station, where it connects with the Lille metro. It underwent a major renovation in 1994, including the renewal of rolling stock, a modification of the route, and the undergrounding of some stations (4 stations in total). The Grand Boulevard tramway is expected to be integrated into a modern tram network, the Lille Métropole tramway, by 2030. Currently, Breda VLC trams operate on the two lines, but their replacement, the Alstom Citadis 305 trams, are expected to arrive by the end of the year.
