The figures are alarming: Germany's statutory health insurance funds are facing a deficit of around 12 billion euros – and the federal government is frantically searching for solutions. One of the ideas under discussion: abolishing free family insurance for spouses. CSU leader Markus Söder calls this "completely absurd" – Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil sees it differently. But who or what actually caused the system to get into this predicament? Andreas Gassen, head of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, speaks plainly in the podcast "NZZ Machtspiel" – and names what many politicians prefer to keep quiet about: Since 2015, spending on benefits under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act has tripled. The ratio has shifted dramatically with regard to the basic income: Today, almost half of the recipients do not have a German passport. In 2015, it was a quarter. Furthermore, the state only pays a lump sum to the health insurance funds for each basic income recipient. This covers barely a third of the actual costs. The rest is borne by the contributors. Gassen calls for an open and honest debate. The system already had problems before the wave of migration – demographic trends, the increasing number of pensioners, and declining contributors. But immigration into the social security system exacerbates the situation and is systematically cross-subsidized from other sources instead of being openly discussed.
