What is a Cyclone? Imagine a giant, swirling engine in the ocean fueled entirely by warm water and windy chaos. That is a cyclone. The Science: At its core, a cyclone is a massive, rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center and fierce thunderstorms. How it Works: Warm ocean water evaporates, rising rapidly into the atmosphere. As this warm air lifts, it leaves a "pocket" of low pressure underneath. Surrounding high-pressure air rushes in to fill the gap, gets pulled into a spin by the Earth's rotation (the Coriolis effect), and boom—you have a swirling monster. The Names: They go by different names depending on where they hit. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific, they’re Hurricanes. In the Northwest Pacific, they’re Typhoons. Anywhere else? Just Cyclones.
