DUPLEX RONY BRAUMAN

July 22, 1994 Cholera epidemic in Rwanda: Overcrowding, disastrous sanitary conditions, and, above all, a lack of clean water: in the Rwandan refugee camps around Goma, Zaire, humanitarian organizations and the French military are trying to stem the cholera epidemic, which has already killed thousands of people. Faced with this new catastrophe, international mobilization is accelerating. A live interview from Montpellier with Rony Brauman, former president of Médecins Sans Frontières, who reacts to the surge of solidarity from the international community. He also cites the urgent needs to improve Rwanda's situation: - Treating people, feeding them, and providing them with clean water; - Bringing refugees back to their country because crops are rotting. He explains the political manipulation that consists of emptying the country of its inhabitants in order to seize power. Finally, he speaks of the country's economic recovery. "Rwanda must recover thanks to its population. The camps in Tanzania and Zaire are patrolled by militias responsible for the genocides. A trial must be held to judge the main culprits of the genocide. I speak as a citizen, a friend of democracy and justice. We need aid for economic recovery."
