Butcher Block Countertops - Stain, Finish, and Install - Beginner's Guide

In this video, I demonstrate how to stain, finish, and install a butcher block countertop. I bought a six-foot-long solid birch butcher block from the Hampton Bay line at Home Depot. This prepackaged butcher blocks come right off the shelf, wrapped and ready to take home for you to apply your stain and finish of choice. With the unfinished option, there are a lot of choices in terms of what finish to use. Because I used mine for a laundry room, I wasn't concerned about a food safe finish, but I did want a finish that I could apply once and not have to periodically maintain like many of the natural oils. If you are planning to install butcher block as a surface for food preparation, then you will need to use a different finish that is a food safe option. This project is very approachable with a minimal set of tools. Always measure carefully before making any cuts. Be patient with the staining and finishing process, as there is a bit of a waiting game to make sure that each coat has an opportunity to properly cure before applying additional coats.
