Okinawa holds a history that must never be forgotten. Nearly 80 years ago, during World War II, a devastating ground battle took place on the island, claiming countless lives. This video follows the timeline of the 1945 Battle of Okinawa, visiting significant historical sites and memorials that remain on the island today. Starting at the “Landing Monument” in Yomitan, where U.S. forces first came ashore, we explore key battle sites, including the Battle of Kakazu, the fierce fighting in Urasoe, the infamous Sugar Loaf Hill in Naha, and finally, Mabuni Hill in the southernmost part of the island, where the war neared its tragic end. Additionally, we delve into the heartbreaking story of the Himeyuri Student Corps, young schoolgirls forced into military service, as well as the ongoing efforts to dispose of unexploded ordnance left behind from the war.
