Subtidal seagrass use by dugongs in the Sibu Archipelago, with Wei-Khang Heng (Harris) - 15 May 2026

The Sibu-Tinggi Archipelago is one of Malaysia's most important dugong habitats, supportive extensive tropical seagrass meadows and a significant local dugong population. It is also one of the few locations in Southeast Asia where the dynamics of dugong habitat use can be studied within a completely subtidal tropical seagrass ecosystem. Wei-Khang Heng (Harris), marine ecologist and PhD researcher at the University of Queensland, shares how Team Sea Habitats (Universiti Malaya) and MareCet mapped Malaysia's largest subtidal seagrass meadow and dugong feeding trails using a non-invasive underwater towed video system. The work provides new isights into dugong foraging ecology and highlights innovative approaches for seagrass and dugong conservation.
