The Bristol Scandal and its Consequences - Professor Martin Elliott
A scandal that rocked the Nation and the Healthcare profession is here discussed in detail: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and... In the 1990s a high mortality for certain operations became evident in Bristol as a result of findings by a ‘whistle-blowing’ anaesthetist. Information was compared with data from other centres and the General Medical Council investigation led to surgeons and the medical director involved being struck off. The Bristol Inquiry was then launched, leading to over 160 recommendations with far reaching implications with major consequences for change in the NHS. But how many of these were put into practice, and how different is the medical practice as a result today? The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and... Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There are currently over 1,700 lectures free to access or download from the website. Website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk Twitter: / greshamcollege Facebook: / greshamcollege
