Cambodian genocide survivor interviews former Khmer Rouge officer
Brother Number One follows Kiwi Rob Hamill to Cambodia where he appears before a War Crimes Tribunal seeking justice for his eldest brother Kerry who, along with two sailing mates, was murdered by the Khmer Rouge in 1978. Through following Rob Hamill’s personal journey, Brother Number One explores one of the “forgotten” genocides of the 20th century, examining how and why nearly 2 million Cambodians could be killed by the Khmer Rouge. In this clip, Rob meets Meas Mutt, who commanded the gunboat which seized his brother's boat. Joining them is Cambodian filmmaker Kulikar Sotho, who lost her father during the Khmer Rouge period. Sotho translates Rob's questions to Mutt, before she herself asks the former officer about how so many lives were lost under Pol Pot. Brother Number One won Best Director Documentary at the Aotearoa Film & Television Awards. The documentary was also screened at the New Zealand International Film Festival and the Melbourne International Film Festival.
