Episode 8: Medicine Plus Mindset with Dr. Lidia Schapira, Stanford Medicine
In this episode, I speak with Dr. Lidia Schapira, Stanford breast oncologist, inaugural director of Stanford’s Cancer Survivorship Program, and former editor of JCO Art of Oncology. We discuss her research on medicine and mindset, the pieces of narrative medicine that have stayed with her most from the more than 1,500 essays she has reviewed, and how those stories have shaped the way she listens, communicates, and cares for patients. We also discussed the communication skills she sees in the best doctors, and why storytelling remains central to good oncology care.
