Kyoto International Manga Museum as a Hub of Knowledge and Community

The Kyoto International Manga Museum holds one of 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻’𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, serving both as a 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. This webinar explores the museum’s dual role: its engagement with the local community as a 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, and its support for 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 as an educational establishment. Drawing on the museum’s unique position at the intersection of scholarship and public accessibility, the presentation examines how manga, long considered mere entertainment, functions as a 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴. Speakers 𝗬𝗼𝗼 𝗦𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘆𝘂𝗻𝗴 is a lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities at Kyoto Seika University (KSU) and a member of the International Manga Research Center of KSU. From 2014, she has been involved in various international and domestic projects related to manga research in affiliation with Kyoto International Manga Museum, which was founded by KSU in 2006. Her main research themes are visual expressions in manga and the international reception of manga. 𝗢𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗞𝗲𝗶𝗸𝗼 has been working as a librarian at the Kyoto International Manga Museum since 2021. Prior to this, she built an extensive career across various institutions, including public libraries, museum archives, and university libraries. At the manga museum, she specializes in collection management while also playing a role in supporting exhibitions and organizing events.
