Historical documentation tells a much more complex story than this triumphalist summary suggests. The first Protestant states were not born proclaiming freedom of conscience. They were born imposing a new official religion, confiscating Church property, and criminalizing the faith practiced for centuries. In England, Henry VIII did not separate Church and State: he subjected the Church to the State, and those who denied its spiritual supremacy—like Saint Thomas More and Saint John Fisher—paid with their lives. The persecution extended for generations and crossed borders, from the forty English martyrs to the martyrs of Gorkum in Calvinist Holland. In this video, we examine, based on the sources, what actually happened and also show in what sense, although not in the triumphalist way that Malafaia describes, the Protestant Reformation contributed to the birth of the secular state: not by the desire of Luther or Calvin, but because free examination, by fragmenting religious authority, ended up giving the State the role of final arbiter between rival confessions.
