¿Extrañas a México? Piensa dos veces
Join my Patreon family and be part of the exclusive channel: / mextho Hello everyone, friends! I am deeply moved by connecting with such a diverse audience, with so many Mexicans and Latinos watching me from the United States and Europe. Every comment expressing nostalgia for Mexico touches my heart. Today I want to delve into that nostalgia and reflect on what it's like to return to Mexico after being away for so long. I receive a wave of comments from people yearning to return to live in Mexico after decades abroad. The idea of returning to what they experienced in their childhood, to that connection rooted in their identity, provokes profound reflection. It's fascinating, isn't it? We are here in Mexico, and yet we feel the desire to leave. But when we are away, we long to return. And I want to delve into that paradox. Let's talk about this phenomenon of returning to the land of our birth after so much time living in a completely different culture. It's a complex reality, especially for those whose children were born abroad and lack a strong attachment or real connection to Mexico. It's sad to see stories of people deceived by broken promises to return to Mexico after a few years in Europe or Germany, only to find themselves decades away from their homeland. During the pandemic, my wife and I found ourselves at a similar crossroads in Germany. We always knew our hearts belonged to Mexico, but facing the idea of leaving years of life behind, including a home, children, and belongings, becomes overwhelming. Returning after so long with an established life in another country is a monumental challenge. I carefully explore the positive and negative aspects that could arise from returning to Mexico. One of the first obstacles I consider is culture shock. Returning after having grown up, started a family, and worked abroad, only to realize that things are not as they used to be, can be overwhelming. The evolution of Mexican society while we were away is also evident; what was once familiar has now transformed. I delve into the cultural differences I experience upon returning, from small daily customs to structural differences in society. I observe how habits change depending on where you are, and how certain common actions abroad may be considered strange or unacceptable in Mexico. I also analyze how life in Mexico can be different from what we imagine. Even if we know the country by heart, the reality of returning can be surprisingly different. And while we highlight the differences, I can't help but mention the wonderful Mexican essence that we miss so much abroad: its people, its warmth, its vibrant culture, and, of course, its delicious food. Now, let's talk about the economic complexities of returning with a different currency. The Mexican peso has a different value compared to the euro or the dollar, which can significantly affect the financial reality of resettling in Mexico. In my personal experience, I close by reflecting on that feeling of not fully "fitting in" when returning home after so long. Although Mexico will always be my home, there are times when I feel like a foreigner, even though I live here. It's a strange duality that many who have lived abroad understand. I deeply thank my audience for their unwavering support and offer them the opportunity to follow my work on Patreon, where I share more than what they see on YouTube. I close with a warm hug and an invitation to consider all the complexities, both pros and cons, when contemplating returning to Mexico.
