Built in the 7th century, the cathedral was commissioned to honor Saint Gregory the Illuminator and quickly became one of the greatest architectural achievements of the medieval Christian world. Unfortunately, the cathedral was destroyed by a powerful earthquake around the 10th century. The ruins remained buried for centuries until they were rediscovered and studied by Armenian archaeologists in the 20th century.
