The family has crossed this obstacle many times since the ducklings were newly hatched. However, water flow and rock conditions change from day to day depending on the weather. As the ducklings grow heavier, surfaces that were once easy to climb may become unexpectedly slippery. After the mother duck flew to the top of the weir, the ducklings followed. Four successfully reached the upper level, but one slipped on the wet rocks and was swept downstream. The separated duckling repeatedly attempted to climb back up. After several unsuccessful tries, it explored a different route, but still struggled to reach the top. Observing the situation from above, the mother duck eventually flew back down to the stranded duckling. Rather than abandoning it, she remained nearby, appearing to encourage and accompany it while waiting. Meanwhile, the four ducklings that had already reached the top seemed to notice their mother's absence. Calling repeatedly, they returned toward the edge of the weir as if waiting for the rest of the family. The mother then flew back to the top once again. Seeing this, the final duckling made one last determined attempt. This time, instead of using the same route as its siblings, it chose a completely different path and swam directly from the bottom to the highest level in a single continuous climb, successfully overcoming the obstacle and rejoining its family. One particularly interesting aspect of this observation is the route selected by the final duckling. While the other four climbed the weir in two stages using an intermediate ledge, this duckling ascended directly from the lowest point to the top without stopping, ultimately completing what appears to have been the most challenging route. Although its earlier attempts may have looked like mistakes, ducklings around one month of age are sometimes observed using this alternative route successfully. This behavior may therefore represent part of the learning and developmental process rather than simple failure.
