The Beatles I'LL CRY INSTEAD - Single Tracked Vocal Remix + A Beatles Bonus 2nd Remix!
Don’t leave after “I’ll Cry Instead”! A surprise mystery Beatles remix — my most requested not to do — will play immediately afterward. “I’ll Cry Instead is too weak of a song to appear in the movie,” said Richard Lester, the director of A Hard Day’s Night. Originally, “Can’t Buy Me Love” was planned to appear twice in the film. George Martin, The Beatles’ producer, asked the boys for another up-tempo song to replace one of those appearances, and as usual, they didn’t disappoint. This is a 2026 remix of the remastered stereo version of “I’ll Cry Instead” from The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night album, where the song was relegated to side two, which contained the non-movie songs. “I’ll Cry Instead” was recorded to 4-track tape and mixed in the typical Beatles stereo style of the period, with the drums and bass placed to one side — in this case, the left channel. For this remix, the bass and drums have been moved to the center to provide a more conventional and balanced foundation. This adjustment is probably the most popular change in all of my Beatles remixes. In addition, John's rhythm guitar has been moved more to the right to expand the stereo sound stage and provide more breathing room for his vocal. Also, and I feel this is a major adjustment, most of John’s double-tracked lead vocal has been removed, giving his exceptional vocal performance a more natural, realistic, live feel. Double-tracking vocals was very popular during the British pop invasion of the 1960s, but it has fallen out of favor over the years. I was very pleased with how this change created a fresher listening experience to my ears, especially after hearing this song for more than 60 years. “I’ll Cry Instead” was recorded in one day, June 1, 1964, at London’s EMI Studio Two, three months after the initial recordings for the A Hard Day’s Night movie. Takes 1–6 were recorded in one section, and takes 7–8 were recorded in another. Takes 6 and 8 were edited together to create the initial mono master for the movie. This version includes a repeat of the first verse to increase the song’s running time so it would better fit the police chase scene in the film. The stereo mix wasn’t made until after the decision had been made not to include the song in the movie, which probably explains why George Martin chose to keep the original running time of 1:44 for the stereo mix. This very enjoyable Beatles tune was first heard by the British public on July 10, 1964, when the A Hard Day’s Night album was released. In America, “I’ll Cry Instead” was released on two albums in 1964: first on the United Artists movie soundtrack album on June 26, and then on Capitol’s Something New, released July 20. Both United Artists and Capitol believed at the time that “I’ll Cry Instead” was going to be in the movie, and both albums were marketed with that in mind. Capitol also released “I’ll Cry Instead” as a single backed with “I’m Happy Just To Dance With You” on July 20, the same day Something New was released — just ten days after Capitol had released the single “A Hard Day’s Night” to the American public. Thanks so much for listening, and please stick around for the special mystery surprise bonus Beatles remix!
