A Houston Restaurant That Feels Like Someone’s Kitchen | Texas Country Reporter

Irma Gonzalez did not set out to build a Houston institution. She was trying to survive. After losing her husband to a violent crime, Irma found herself raising four children, grieving deeply, and searching for a way forward. With little money and no clear plan, she began selling tacos out of a small sandwich shop in downtown Houston. What started as a necessity slowly became something more. Irma’s Original grew into a restaurant that feels less like a business and more like a home. There are no menus, only conversation. Recipes are made fresh, just as Irma would cook for her own family. The decor reflects her life and her memories, filled with objects that make the space feel lived in rather than designed. Customers return week after week for the food, but they stay because of Irma herself. She remembers faces, listens to stories, and treats everyone like family. On Astros game days, the restaurant fills quickly. On quieter afternoons, it still serves the same purpose. Irma shares her story openly, not for sympathy, but to remind others that life can be rebuilt piece by piece. The pain never fully disappears, but it softens over time. Through cooking, caring, and showing up every day, she found her way back. This Texas Country Reporter classic story is about grief, grit, and the kind of hospitality that comes from someone who knows what it means to start over.
