The Outlaw Oracle Flip-Through and Pairings The Outlaw Oracle by Hillary Banks Self captures a retro-faded-polaroid-esque Southwestern US aesthetic. It’s a unique oracle with a strong, fresh voice. I loved it on its own and in pairings. My critical feedback is just one note: there is only one person of color depicted in the deck, the Fortune Teller card, and he is depicted as a stereotypical South Asian person in a turban with a mustache. I want to acknowledge how difficult it is as a white artist to thread the needle of representation vs. appropriation. The artist might have been criticized if she did include more imagery having to do with Mexican heritage. This is something I noticed and wanted to acknowledge, but I also want to acknowledge how difficult it can be to know what is appropriate to depict and when it might not be our story to tell.
