They drove us to the Chiang Khong border, where we did Thai immigration, then boarded a mini bus that crossed the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge into Laos. Snacks were waiting on the other side. From there, another bus took us to the slow boat pier — and then it was 2 days on the Mekong.Day 1 is a packed boat full of travelers, winding through jungle and hills. We reached Pak Beng by 5 PM. I booked my accommodation in advance and would recommend you do the same — options are limited and the boat arrives with a crowd.Day 2 is 8 hours of some of the most remote landscape in Southeast Asia.
