法話:相手ではなく自分を変えてみる

The other day, I read a book by Amemiya Kotorin entitled "At the End of Intolerance in This Country." This book is based on the Sagamihara incident (a case of the murder of disabled people) and is written in the form of a dialogue on how we should think about this incident. My favourite author, Mukaiyachi Ikuyoshi of Bethel House, is also in the dialogue. Mukaiyachi Ikuyoshi recalled a news story that was read right after the Sagamihara incident (a case of the murder of disabled people). The news story said that Microsoft had connected an AI developed to the internet, used deep learning, and absorbed the negative information that was overflowing on the internet. When the AI began to deny the Jewish Holocaust and praise Hitler, it was deemed dangerous and development was halted. When Mukaiyachi Ikuyoshi heard about the Sagamihara incident (a case of the murder of disabled people), he felt that Uematsu was in the same situation as the AI in the news story. This is because the content of Uematsu's claims contained many discriminatory remarks and offensive language that are overflowing on the internet. AI also takes in a lot of discriminatory and aggressive information and expels it. This is the same in the environment that surrounds us, and our own thoughts are shaped unconsciously by taking in various information from the Internet. And we may end up receiving only biased information, which I feel is a negative aspect of today's Internet society. Unlike television or newspapers, the information we get from the Internet tends to be only what we want, and it tends to be biased. Mukaiyachi Ikuyoshi says that the Sagamihara incident (the murder of a disabled person) was the result of the influence of such information on the Internet, which led to the construction of a logic that the defendant Uematsu is unproductive towards disabled people. Mukaiyachi Ikuyoshi cares for people with mental disorders and schizophrenia, and there is research by medical anthropologists that shows that schizophrenia suffers from symptoms such as auditory and visual hallucinations due to mental anxiety, and that these auditory and visual hallucinations reflect discourse that is prevalent in society. A comparative study of schizophrenic auditory hallucinations in the United States, India, and Ghana revealed that compared to the United States, where insults like "die" and "kill" are more prevalent, in India and Ghana, where the local communities are more prosperous, the auditory hallucinations were more often compliments and positive words. At Beteru Home, Mukaiyachi Ikuyoshi has seen people who hear aggressive auditory hallucinations, and there have been cases where the influence of these hallucinations has led to people hurting others. He came across this research while wondering what to do about this. After that, he made an effort to create a community where people use positive language, and as the environment around him improved, the content of his hallucinations became more positive. Mukaiyachi Ikuyoshi's own experience at Beteru Home revealed that the auditory hallucinations heard by people with schizophrenia reflect society, and he was reminded that people create who they are by absorbing the words, atmosphere, and culture that fly around in society. Until now, medical treatment has attempted to resolve the auditory hallucinations and negative thinking of people with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses by giving them medicine and changing the person, but this is a mistake, and he says that these people happen to have more sensitive antennae than others, so they absorb the atmosphere and reality of the society around them more readily than others, and as a result, they develop difficulties in living and illness.
