The Seagull

Anton Chekhov's 1896 play "The Seagull" in a new adaptation written and directed by Craig Johnson. Produced by Theatre in the Round, Minneapolis, January 12 -- February 4, 2024. This performance was recorded on January 20, 2024. Archival recording, single shot with iPhone. CAST: Irina Arkadina/Colleen Hennen Petra Sorin/Laure Wiebers Konstantin/Berto Borroto Trigorin/Kaleb Baker Nina/Amy Eckberg Dr. Dorn/David Coral Shamrayev/James Ramlet Paulina/Courtney Peterson Masha/Dariana Perez Medvedenko/Matt Wall PRODUCTION: Director, adapter/Craig Johnson Assistant Director, Choreography, Intimacy/Rebecca Wickert Stage Manager/Lauren Volkart Assistant Stage Manager/Matthew Wilhelm Scenic Design/Michael Hoover Costume Design/Claire Looker Prop Design/Kris Schmidt Lights/Andrew Vance Sound/Dietrich Poppen Notes: Primary changes in this version: Peter Sorin changed to Petra Sorin for gender balance, longer speeches condensed, workmen and minor servant characters eliminated, and dialogue generally lightened and made more colloquial. The goal was to make Chekhov accessible to a wider audience, but still retain the plot, characters, relationships, scene structure, themes, and re-invest in Chekhov's impulse for the show to be a comedy (well, tragicomedy?). The production's goal was to be 'faithful and fresh,' and the central theme: "the love of art and the art of love" (Medvedenko, scene 1).
