◎This is a pencil drawing class starting from the basics. Everyone starts as a beginner. Anyone with an interest in drawing is welcome. We'll start with a preparatory section, then move on to beginner and intermediate levels to improve your drawing skills. I'll try to explain things as clearly as possible. Have fun, but be patient as you draw. ◎This time, for the 10th intermediate level lesson, we drew an eggplant and a pepper. While drawing the shapes of eggplant and peppers isn't particularly difficult, I realized that in order to portray the deep color of the eggplant while also expressing its three-dimensionality and the space in which it is placed, it's important to use logic, not just relying on the information you can see with your eyes, but also thinking about the direction of the light, the orientation of the surface, the distance between the front and back, the intensity of the eggplant's color, and the overall balance, thinking, "This is how it looks here, so it should be like this." There are four main points to consider this time. ① For natural forms, think of the shape and light and shade as variations and combinations of basic forms (cube, cylinder, sphere). Think of an eggplant as a combination of a cylinder and hemisphere, and a bell pepper as a cylinder and a rectangular prism with three visible sides. ② For motifs like eggplant that are dark in color and where changes in shade are difficult to see, consider the changes in light and shade as if it were pure white. Also, place a white paper cup in the same position as the eggplant and apply the changes in light and shade from that. ③ For motifs like eggplant that are dark in color and where changes in shade are difficult to see, paint the dark, vivid parts of the eggplant in the foreground firmly, and paint them more faintly further back and near the outline, consciously varying the intensity, light and shade between the front and back to create a sense of three-dimensionality. ④ Even if there are multiple motifs, think of the two as one motif, and express space by painting the foreground strongly, darkly and clearly, and painting them fainter, lighter and vaguer as they go further back.
