In Conversation with 4x Emmy Award Winner Najibullah Quraishi

In this powerful installment of The Context Studio Banned Book Club, I had the privilege of speaking with Najibullah Quraishi, award-winning investigative journalist, filmmaker, and founder of Clover Media. Our conversation centered on The Kite Runner and the larger realities that shape many of the book's most difficult themes, including power, exploitation, silence, trauma, and the stories that societies often struggle to confront. Drawing from his groundbreaking documentary The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan, Najibullah takes us behind the scenes of his work investigating Bacha Bazi and documenting the experiences of boys subjected to exploitation in Afghanistan. We discuss the challenges of reporting on abuse, the ethical responsibilities of documentary filmmaking, and what it means to tell stories that many people would rather ignore. Together, we explore how storytelling, whether through literature, journalism, or film, can bring hidden realities into public view. We discuss the role of witnesses, the impact of censorship, and why uncomfortable stories are often the ones that most urgently need to be told. Our conversation also examines the broader themes that connect *The Kite Runner and The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan, silence, power, guilt, survival, and the lasting consequences of violence. Najibullah reflects on the importance of centering victims' experiences, challenging dominant narratives, and creating space for difficult but necessary conversations. As The Kite Runner continues to face challenges and restrictions in schools across the United States, we also discuss why books and stories that confront uncomfortable truths often become targets of censorship, and what society loses when those stories disappear from public conversation.
