#appleslice #appletart #applerecipe Apple Slice 🛒 Ingredients (Serves 12 squares) For the pastry base: 2 cups (250 g / 9 oz) plain flour ½ cup (125 g / 4½ oz) butter, frozen then grated ¼ cup (50 g / 2 oz) caster sugar or icing sugar 1 egg yolk 1–2 tbsp cold water, as needed For the apple layer: 1 lb (450 g / 16 oz) Bramley apples, peeled and thinly sliced 1 tbsp lemon juice 3–4 tbsp sugar For the sponge topping: ⅔ cup (150 g / 5 oz) butter or margarine, softened ¾ cup (150 g / 5 oz) sugar 3 medium eggs 1¼ cups (150 g / 5 oz) self-raising flour 1 tsp vanilla extract Flaked almonds, to decorate (optional) To finish: Icing sugar, for dusting 👩‍🍳 Method 1️⃣ Preheat oven to 190°C / 170°C fan / 375°F. Grease and line a 9x9 inch (23x23 cm) tin. 2️⃣ Make the pastry: Rub together flour and grated butter until breadcrumbs form. Stir in sugar. Add egg yolk and enough cold water to bring together. 3️⃣ Roll pastry to fit base of tin, letting it come up slightly at the sides. Chill for 30 minutes. 4️⃣ Blind bake: Prick all over with a fork, cover with greaseproof paper and baking beans (or dried pasta/lentils). Bake 15 mins, remove paper/beans, bake 5 mins more. Cool completely. 5️⃣ Make the sponge: Beat butter and sugar until pale.
