Anthony Burgess and Lord George Brown appear on TV-am 27th February 1983
Michael Parkinson is joined by controversial author Anthony Burgess, who takes to the stage at the Royal Festival Hall this evening to give readings of his latest novels. He is asked about British attitudes to authors and his novels Earthly Powers and A Clockwork Orange. Now that he lives abroad, he is asked about the changes in Britain since he left the UK in 1968 and his pessimistic view of his home country. Lord George Brown talks about the nature of work changing, unemployment and his opinion of the trade unions. Gillian Reynolds reflects on the changing media landscape and apocalyptic themes prevalent in much of contemporary discourse. They discuss disillusionment with the political process. Anthony Burgess believes that the world is becoming overcrowded and reflects on the implications for food supply, employment, etc. Lord Brown believes a dictatorship is inevitable unless the main political parties can change.
