You can scare people with immigrants, you can scare people with LGBT people—or, as it turns out, you can scare them with predators. Zoologist Robert Maślak, straight from a parliamentary committee, explains how panic around wolves and bears is becoming political fuel and what's really behind the "alarm" from the Bieszczady Mountains. We discuss whether bears prey on humans (no), the absurd Confederation amendment, which stipulates that any bear that attacks must be killed immediately, and poaching—at least 150 wolves a year, and among the identified perpetrators, almost exclusively hunters. And then we discuss the most powerful: the local system, in which the police chief, the mayor, and the priest are sometimes hunters—and who the ordinary resident should appeal to in such situations.
